Support Under-Privileged Children’s Education
Support the Education of Primary Grade Under-Privileged Tribal Children in Bissamcuttack, Rayagada, Odisha.
The status of school education in the rural areas of Rayagada district of South Odisha is not something we can celebrate. The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) which is based on nationwide survey reflects that, in Rayagada district, in the year 2022, only 10.6% of Standard III to V Children could do subtraction and 17.5% of Standard VI to VIII children could do single digit division.
Klorofeel Foundation believes that students from the underprivileged areas mostly face a disenabling learning environment and improper guidance; and get little support from their family and the friend circle. Thus, through a set of Inside-school and Outside-school interventions, the Foundation has brought together the parents, teachers, educational administrators and community for improving the quality of school education of primary grade children from tribal community in Jhigidi and Kankubadi Gram Panchayats of Bissamcuttack Block of Rayagda district.
Apart from working within five government primary schools, the Foundation has set up 19 Learning Centers (LC) in each of the 19 villages of the two Gram Panchayats where the outside-school-hour learning of 419 children from grade 1 to 5 of these schools are taken care of. Fifteen to thirty students attend each Learning Centre. At the LC, the focus is on the children to achieve grade-specific competency, move into a path of self-directed learning and inculcate social and environmental responsibility. Local educated youth, primarily young girls, who are named as Saathis, facilitate the learning at the Centre. Each Saathi facilitates a maximum of 15 students. The Saathis have been trained to create a fear-free and joyful learning environment, make learning contextual and experiential, and promote a spirit of inquiry among the children.
Mothers (of the children who study at each LC), are organised through a Mothers’ Group, in each of these villages, from the beginning of the intervention. Each Mothers’ Group owns and manages the respective LC, including finding a space for the Learning Center, selecting Saathis and deciding on the timing of the sessions.
The functioning of each learning centre has an annual operating cost of ₹6000/Child that covers the remuneration and training Saathis, and provision of Teaching and Learning Materials at the Learning Centres.
